The Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has broken ground on a new assembly plant in Cambodia , as it continues to expand production in Southeast Asia, according to local media reports.
The plant will create 200 jobs and position BYD alongside global automakers like Ford, Toyota, and Hyundai, which already operate in Cambodia. In addition, BYD plans to open two service centers and deploy 200 EV charging stations across the country, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Cambodia’s green mobility goals.
The company plans to open two service centres and install 200 electric vehicle charging stations across Cambodia, supporting the infrastructure needed for a sustainable e lectric vehicle market. BYD will join other global automotive giants like Ford, Toyota, and Hyundai, which have already established vehicle assembly factories in Cambodia.
The Cambodia plant would be BYD’s second in Southeast Asia after Thailand, where it opened a wholly owned facility in July 2024, with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. BYD is also planning to complete construction of its $1-billion Indonesian plant by the end of 2025, Reuters reported in January.
The decision by BYD to establish a footprint in Cambodia reflects investors’ confidence in the country’s political stability. The company plans to open two service centres and install 200 electric vehicle charging stations across Cambodia, supporting the infrastructure needed for a sustainable e lectric vehicle market.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has issued a permit for the BYD car assembly project, with a total investment of US$32 million and expected job opportunities of over 200.
The global containerized energy storage and solar container market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with commercial and industrial energy storage demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Containerized energy storage solutions now account for approximately 50% of all new modular energy storage installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by industrial power needs and commercial facility demand. Europe follows with 40% market share, where containerized energy storage systems have provided reliable electricity for manufacturing plants and commercial operations. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 60% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing containerized energy storage system prices by 30% annually. Emerging markets are adopting containerized energy storage for industrial applications, commercial buildings, and utility projects, with typical payback periods of 1-3 years. Modern containerized energy storage installations now feature integrated systems with 500kWh to 5MWh capacity at costs below $200 per kWh for complete industrial energy solutions.
