Nevertheless, as most energy planning studies highlight, given the remoteness, low population density and rough terrain of Afghanistan, stand-alone solutions might be the most cost-effective way to electrify large portion of the rural population for years to come.
Along with electricity, cooking and heating are the central energy demands for Afghan households.41 The cross-over between electricity and cooking/heating is low, with electric stovetops as the main cooking device being rare; electric heating less so but still not dominant compared to using solid fuels.
